Beauty and Culture

Over the years, each community measured the beauty on their own vision, culture, beliefs and location. Because of, technology, traveling and immigration we can recognize the overlap of one culture to another, and the similarities.

In the earliest years, each group of people has their own beliefs of woman beauty and the way that woman dress herself. For example; the Arabian gulf culture and Indian culture. Both of them, they prefer women with long black hair, white skin and big black eyes. Kohl is a black substance, commonly used by the women of the Arabian Gulf as eyeliner and eye shadow. Apart from making the eye look bigger, it was also believed that kohl eyeliner could prevent eye diseases. In desert areas, kohl is used by both men and women, as it controls the suns glare from the desert, and thus is of huge practical use. Henna is commonly used in these cultures to stain nails, skin and hair to enhance beauty by creating decorative henna designs. Black henna is used on the feet and hands, while red henna is typically used on the tips of the fingers and toes. But, Arabian woman their traditional dress is (Abaya) which covered the whole body. Where, the Indian woman wears (Sari) which appears the beauty of the body. Sari is a strip cloth ranging from four to nine meters that is draped over the body. There are many similarities between Indian and Arabian Gulf culture, but when we compare the Arabian and Indian culture with Westerns aspect of beauty we will find a lot of differences. In Westerns they prefer the tallness and caring about it so much as an important measure of beauty. Then, followed by long blonde hair, in spite of they are thrilled by the black hair, clear brown skin with sporty skinny body, wide shoulders, fully thick lips and green or blue eyes. And these standers are related to typical look of European woman.

In our generation, the media affects the culture in different sides where we can figure the overlap between different cultures. In one hand, in Arabian Gulf nowadays, the girls dye their hairs into blond, wear a light eye contact lenses and their dress become as Westerns fashions. In the other, the Westerns like the Eastern beauty which depends on black eyes and black hair.

Finely, I believed that; (Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart.) Kahlil Gibran.

  4. I think that as beauty differs from one culture to another, it also differs between people from the same culture... for example, some people like chubby girls, some like them slim, some like oval faces, some like circular faces. It depends on how each person defines beauty, but ofcourse culture plays a major role in setting the main aspects of beauty..
Anyway, I do beleive that, in a way, every one is beautiful. You may have beautiful eyes, tiny nose, gorgeous smile, impresive personality and the list goes on ;)
Nice topic Farah, Keep up the good work ;)

  5. This is interesting, women really love to talk about beauty in all over the world;). I agree with Nagham that the west prefer the Arabian beauty like Salma Hayek and even Kim Kardashian she looks like Arab and they are famous in Hollywood because of their beauty. I also agree with Fatma that everyone is beautiful somehow.
    Nice topic Farah.

  6. It is an interesting topic to talk about.
It think that beauty is taken from the nature of any culture you will talk about it. For example, the Arabic culture they like girls with big eyes they call it in Arabic عيون المها )الغزال) and with a long dark hair.

Nice topic girls loved it ;*

  7. I like this topic it talks about beauty and I think it is difficult to define one measure of beauty because everyone and every culture has a specific measure and opinion about beauty. Such as in the Arabian Gulf people prefer women with black hair, white skin and black eyes. But, in the Westerns people prefer the tallness, blonde hair and green or blue eyes. Nowadays all these aspects of culture are changed to follow the fashions. In my opinion the beauty should be spiritual beauty rather than physical beauty because spiritual beauty is never dying.

  10. You’ve chosen a very interesting topic, I thing nowadays there is an international condition for beauty. I agree with you it’s the effect of the media which keeps changing the concept of beauty. And its effecting people girls are suffering from anorexia and boys now using injection to have an athletic body just to reach the perfect look ignoring their health. however, kohl and long black hair are still wanted in Arabian countries it hard to effect the Arabian beauty ^_*
Thank you for posting this topic I really enjoyed it

  11. I seriously can't agree more!! beauty differs from one country to another and from one culture to another as some may like long black hair and black eyes, where as, other may love short blonde hair and colored eyes. But, over all beauty changes from one persons' perspective to another and that is why we have to accept different people and different perspectives. Besides, I believe that we have to tolerate one another in order to accept each other the way we are.
Thank you for your lovely presentation.
